  •  A Late-Night Surprise
    It had been a busy day. I had just got off work at about 2 a.m. I have two jobs: during the week, I work in construction, and on Friday and Saturday nights, I work as a bartender at my best friend Ted's nightclub downtown from 9:30p.m.-1:30a.m. Since Ted and I have known each other all our lives, he's a little partial to paying me extra ($18.50 an hour—not bad for 4 hours work, but his is one of the hottest nightspots in the city).     We had finally finished helping my friend Dave move into his new condo. Most of his friends had already left and it was just the three of us. I was standing with Susan kissing her goodbye. She needed to get her brother's pickup back to him before it got too late. It was just beginning to get dark and she had to drive across town.
